Scene Title

I walk down to the pay phone and call the Domestic Violence Refuge Helpline, being careful to take all the backstreets in case Kai is walking back from the shops.

I’m on hold for what seems like forever, the whole time praying that Kai doesn’t happen to walk past the pay phone.

After answering dozens of personal questions, the woman on the other end of the phone says she has a vacancy for me at a refuge about two hours away.

I have to take two buses and a train; my head is pounding and my throat is sore after Kai strangled me. All I want is a cool drink of water, but I’ll have to wait until I get to the refuge as I have no money.
